Women In 'Shaun of The Dead'

Women in 'Shaun of The Dead'

At the start of the film the women are shown to be dependent on the men from how Shaun's girlfriend (Liz) expects Shaun to book the table at the restaurant, which then he fails to do that and then Liz takes control and ends their relationship because of his lazy attitude towards life shown when she says "you promised you would stop smoking when i did, you promised you'd go to the gym, you promised you would drink red wine instead of beer, you promised you would come on holiday with me... You promised things would change" shaun: " I'll give up smoking (throws packet) what else?" Liz: "Its not enough Shaun" which proves that she is the grown up and is taking action after years of being together.

This shot here of Liz shows that she is serious on ending it with Shaun because of her facial expressions of anger and aggression.  Liz says to shaun "If I don't do something I'm ganna end up at that pub every night for the rest of my life like those sad old fuckers drinking myself to death wondering what the hell happened to my life " and by that she meant finish with their relationship which then the two shot of Shaun and Liz talking then cuts to a mid shot of Shaun, portraying his misery to what just happened making the men seem as useless by not doing anything to get her back and who are dependent on the women although men in society are shown as strong although here its switched to the women (Liz) to be strong and independent.

'Shaun Of The Dead'

I re-watched the film of 'Shaun Of The Dead' after not watching in years, just to recap over the film. My thoughts on the film was that it was really well made as having a spilt genre of horror and comedy (zom-com) which can be quite challenging to get a balance of the two  and making it work well together. The first scene of shaun waking up in the morning was comic  from how the camera starts at his feet and tilts up which I assumed he was already a zombie from the way he moved and yawned.

In the film men are first revealed as lazy and immature from the way they wake up to sit down with their feet on furniture and in an untidy room.
which shows men as not the dominate hero figure here, but as careless from how they live in a mess and when shaun goes to the shop and is unaware that everyone are zombie also at after the pub.

which portrays in the film how men are shown as slow responsive and care free to the fact they could get eaten alive.

The films that I am focusing on

film studies

The films I am focusing on are the genre of zombie films, the reason why I choose this genre because  I think it is an area which i could go into a lot of depth on as I like them and are my favorite type of films because of the humor of it and the violence which both blend well together to create 'zom-coms'. Although, i have only chosen two 'zom-coms' of 'Shaun of The Dead' and 'Zombie Land' and the zombie horror of 'Dawn of The Dead' which is a re-make of the 1978 'Dawn of The Dead' which in some ways when I was watching this film before researching on it, I thought that it was a 'zom-com' because of some comic sides of the movie, but also paranoying to watch because of the quick escapes. By already judging the film that it was a comedy as well as a horror, I interpreted this from some of the scenes, such as when dawn came and the parents woke up to a zombie daughter silhouette at the door, and then came closer to see that she was covered in blood, then lois (parent) goes to help her, and the close up shot looking as to be affection of father and daughter, suddenly gets a shock when he gets a chunk of his neck bitten off, which I thought was comic, which is why I first chose this film because I thought it fitted into my genre of 'zom-coms'.
